Kildare rents rise 11% in a year

"My mam used to say he should have been a social worker" TD pays tribute to Garda dad in debate on community policing

Sinn Féin TD and party Spokesperson on Defence, Réada Cronin is accusing the Government of ‘turning their backs on tenants’ as Kildare rents soared by over 11% in the last year.

The figures are from the latest Daft.ie Rent Report, which shows new rents increasing by almost 12% in the last year across the State.

Dep Cronin said: "The latest Daft.ie Rent Report shows rents soaring here in Kildare just as they are all over the State.

"The average new rent across Kildare is now over 1,700 with renters reporting figures far in excess of this. It’s totally unsustainable for people on ordinary incomes.

“For the people coming to my office, the housing crisis is a humanitarian crisis. They are camped out with family or friends, or paying exorbitant rents to share substandard properties while the government whistles.

“Every day I hear from people here in North Kildare who say their mental health is hanging by a thread. Generations, even those with good jobs, are locked out of home ownership, trapped paying crippling rents and feeling they have no hope of ever owning a place of their own. This means their lives put on hold, as they struggle to keep going and keep up with rents that are rocketing.

"Despite the falling private rental stock and rising private rents, Government's cost-rental delivery is appallingly low. Just 684 cost rental homes were delivered last year across the state. This is a drop in the ocean of what is needed to make a real difference.

"It is clear to everyone except the Government that their cost-rental targets are too low and the price of these cost-rental units is too high.

"They must dramatically increase and speed up the delivery of these urgently-needed cost-rental homes and ensure that they are genuinely affordable to working people in North Kildare.

“There is too much pain, too much worry, too much uncertainty over housing in people’s lives all over North Kildare. In Government, Sinn Féin would deliver genuinely affordable homes to rent and to buy and tackle this blight on working people’s lives and futures. Stop and think and see that we live for such a short time. The basics of living should not be that crucifying in costs or so scarce."
