Plans are being made to close access to a Naas street.

It's likely that vehicles will not be able to access Abbey Street via Basin street.

Kildare County Council believes that this will “significantly improve the environment for vulnerable road users in the area."

It’s considering restricting traffic from South Main Street into Abbey Street via Basin Street.

The council sees Basin Street as an excellent link from the main street to the greenway along the canal - when it is completed.

KCC engineer Donal Hodgins was responding to Cllr Bill Clear, who asked for a review of the junction with Basin Street and Main Street - and for a pedestrian crossing to be provided there.

“You’re taking your life in your hands there and there have been a number of accidents,” he said.

However, Cllr Fintan Brett problems could arise with works planned for Basin  Street.

He pointed out that the street provides access to Naas Courthouse and it is used by garda and prison service vehicles.
