KILDARE ANIMALS IN NEED: Homes needed for larger rescue dogs

The Kildare and West Wicklow Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has seventeen rescue dogs in its care who are ready to go to their forever homes.

Of these, only one — Oscar, a feisty Jack Russell — is a small dog, and he already has a lot of interest in him and will find a home very soon.

The small dogs that come into the care of the KWWSPCA usually find homes very quickly, as there is such a demand to adopt small rescue dogs. However, most of our rescue dogs are large breed, and there are not so many people wanting to adopt a larger rescue dog. Most of our rescue dogs come into our care from a Dog Pound, which means they have been found as strays.

They were either not microchipped or, if they were, the owner could not be traced as the microchip registration details were not correct. Most of these dogs are good natured, often house trained and used to traveling in cars, so they would have had good homes at some stage of their lives, but for some reason or another, found themselves unwanted and without a home.

Of the dogs currently in our care, beside Oscar the terrier, we have seven greyhound/lurchers, three collies, two German Shepherds and four ‘mixed breeds’.

Some of our rescue dogs would come into our care as welfare cases. They may have been found seriously malnourished or with untreated wounds or other serious veterinary needs that we are able to treat before looking for permanent homes for them.

Some of these dogs would go into foster homes, rather than be at our Animal Shelter, where they can get more personal treatment.

We have recently had two dogs in our care with broken legs, both of whom had to spend several months in a foster home before they were ready to be rehomed and another two dogs came to us as their owners had suddenly died and there was no family to look after the dog.

One of these is Summer, pictured here, whom we featured in our article two weeks ago.

Pictured here also is Bob, a very handsome lurcher, who has been in our care since November, the longest of any of our present rescue dogs. Details of all the dogs available for adoption can be seen on the KWWSPCA website www.kwwspca.ie.
