KILDARE ANIMALS IN NEED: Help needed to deal with feral cats

KWWSPCA Column
The KWWSPCA TNR (trap, neuter, return) team are in constant demand from people who want to do right for the feral cats in their area.
These cats are to be found in every town and village in Kildare, as well as in rural locations, and many live a very short, unhealthy, dangerous life and die young.
The KWWSPCA TNR team helps by trapping the cats, getting them checked by a vet and neutered, then the cats are usually returned to their normal haunts, with no more risk of more kittens. These cats continue to live a feral life, but will be healthier, safer and have a much better chance of a long life.
If kittens are found during the trapping process, then they can be tamed and re-homed as domestic pets, as can some of the adult cats who have responded well to human contact.
Last weekend our TNR team was in the Castledermot area, setting traps. In all, eight cats were trapped that day. They were taken to the Hawkfield Veterinary Hospital in Newbridge to be checked and neutered the next morning, then returned to where they were trapped the following day.
Please call 089 4588162 or 087 7045913 or email [email protected] if you need help with feral cats.
To help cover some of the veterinary costs, we ask for a contribution of €50 for each cat.
The Remi Brothers
In some cases, cats are not returned to where they were trapped as the location is not suitable for them.
The Remi Brothers are such cats. They were trapped as young feral cats together. The white Remi boy has made some progress with socialisation but not enough for a family home, so he will be re-homed to a farmyard or stables, to be an outside cat, where he can come and go as he pleases.
Black and white Remi boy has made a lot more progress with the volunteers at our cat unit, and although he is shy, he will be re-homed as a domestic cat where he will become part of a family.
Both cats have been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and treated for worms and fleas. If you would like to come and meet the boys, you can call/text 089 4588162 or email [email protected]. A €100 adoption fee per cat is required to help offset veterinary costs.
