A new homeless street outreach initiative  has been launched in Naas by Aontú, the political party.

And the service will be provided on a weekly basis on the main street every Tuesday at 6.30pm.

Anita Mhic Gib, cathaoirleach of the party in County Kildare says it’s  encouraged by the response from both the public and service users alike.

“The people of Naas were just so good and dropped off  toiletries, nappies and other baby necessities and some non-perishable foods that we can  distribute to the homeless of the area through our on street homeless outreach.”

She added: “Naturally, we would prefer if this service wasn’t needed as it is just terrible to witness human beings being in such a vulnerable and desperate situation, but we are committed to doing what we can to help”.

She said those involved were humbled by the reaction of the homeless people who were “so grateful to see us.”

She said: “They were happy to enjoy a hot cup of soup, eat some food and just chat. That is what struck us very forcibly; they want to be seen, they want to be heard and they badly  need and want people to listen to them. Being homeless is a very solitary and isolating experience, it’s dehumanising and we in Aontú Cill Dara hope to bring some compassion and  humanity to those who find themselves in such an awful plight”.
