KILDARE ANIMAL COLUMN: Milestone birthdays for Roly and Smokie

Two distinguished rescue pets have celebrated milestone birthdays. Roly (in the red coat) is an Italian greyhound, and he recently celebrated his 20th birthday!

He was adopted a few years ago by one of our KWWSPCA volunteers, along with another Italian greyhound, Cody, who celebrated his 12th birthday on the same day.

At the birthday party they were joined by Kim, a lurcher cross, and Hugo, a lurcher, two KWWSPCA rescue dogs.

They all live together in harmony, with Roly being the boss.

Smokie recently celebrated her 21st birthday. Smokey is owned by another KWWSPCA volunteer.

She used to be a very active cat and has seen a lot in her long life, and although she is still well and enjoys life, she prefers to observe the world from the comfort of her warm bed.

This is just a reminder that when you take on the care of a dog or a cat, it is a long-term commitment, not to be taken lightly. Too many people enjoy their pet for a few years and then because of changed circumstances such as children leaving home to go to college, change of jobs, moving house, or for no good reason at all, they no longer want the animal and expect someone else to take it and care for it.

This is the reason so many animal rescues, such as the KWWSPCA, are full to the brim with lovely pets that no longer fitted into the lives of their previous owners. This is so sad for the animal concerned.

Donations for Noah’s Ark

Just a reminder that if you wish to donate items to Noah’s Ark, the KWWSPCA Charity Shop in Cutlery Road, Newbridge, it is open from 10am to 5pm, Mondays to Saturdays for small quantities of donations. As there is very little storage space in the shop, if you have a large quantity to donate, or large items, you can either leave them at the KWWSPCA Animal Shelter in Athgarvan or call Ann 086 3413017 to make arrangements for delivery or collection.

We are so very grateful to everyone who donates to Noah’s Ark as the revenue from the shop, its online sales and regular online auctions, provides an important part of the income for the charity. Unfortunately, we cannot take in used electrical goods, bedding, anything damaged or dirty, or children’s toys.
