Upgrade in verse
Edenderry GP Dr. Philip Brady who had produced some fine books of Poetry has once again come up with a wonderful poem on the Enfield Road Upgrade.
The Enfield road is coming
And I know it’s worth the wait,
For one thing that was crooked
Now is going straight.
So get out the navvy shovels
We’ve been saving them for years,
And the Enfield road we’ll straighten
With Varadkar’s Engineers.
The Planners were assembled
With their very best designs,
And each was questioned closely
On the merits of straight lines,
Requirements were simple
On what they had to do
Cut out the collywobbles
On the good old 402.
To get the fiscal finance
They decided on a plan,
They’d have to get the RSA
With the psychedelic van,
They’d park it outside Johnstown
On a little bit that’s straight,
They’d fit it with a camera
Then sit, and watch and wait.
They would ambush at the fifty
They’d flash behind the sign
And fill Varadkar’s coffers
With an eighty euro fine.
One morning without warning,
The paling posts appeared,
With chainsaws and bulldozers
A pathway soon was cleared,
A farmer lost his birches
Out in Carbury to the saw,
Another lost his topsoil
Where the plough once turned the scraw.
A lamb turned to its mother
Said “this roadway will not stop”
“Oh mother dear I’m fearful
Ewe and I are for the chop”.
The Enfield road is coming,
We’re ecstatic in the town,
We’ve eleven zebra crossings,
To try it slow down,
They sent for Jensen Button
With his F1 driving skill
But he wouldn’t get to eighty
Round the hairpins of Ardkill,
But when the road is straightened
For Jensen, me and you
We all can do a hundred
Down the good old 402.
And the boyo with the camera
That was flashing in the van,
He will be redundant
Let him catch us if he can.
