Fianna Fail

Fianna Fail

Following the sudden death of its Vice-President, Mr. Leo Byrne, a special meeting of the Frank English Fianna Fáil Cumann was called to afford members and friends of Leo the opportunity to remember him.

The meeting recalled the occasions when Leo would recount how he first began attending the local Cumann meetings at the age of ten, being brought to same by his mother.

Leo was held in high regard by the Cumann members and elected representatives. He was a Party man first and foremost and had great eyes and ears on the ground which resulted in Leo bringing many matters of local concern to the Party’s representatives and raising same at the monthly meetings.

Leo’s involvement with Fianna Fáil and other local groups such as the Irish Wheelchair Association, Athy Soccer Club, Athy Credit Union, St. Dominic’s Bingo, meant that Leo would have been an ideal candidate for local election, but he chose not to, instead Leo served as local Director of Elections on a number of occasions and was also regarded as a great organiser of the annual national collection.

Leo Byrne’s passing marks the end of an era for Fianna Fáil in Athy. He loved Athy; he loved Fianna Fáil and kept the flag flying in good times and bad and most of all, he loved his family.

To his wife Mary, daughters Lorna and Karen, the Cumann extends its deepest sympathy. Sonas na bhFláitheas ar a Anam dilís.
