Camogie club

Dermot Breen, PRO reports “Our Seniors were at home for Round 2 of the Camogie League on Monday 2nd April against Cappagh. After a closely fought duel, in which scores were again at a premium the Larries had to settle for their second draw of the League, Laurence’s 0-4 Cappagh 1-1. Cappagh made much of the early running in the first half but Laurence’s were first on the scoreboard with a point from play by Louise Keatley in the eight minute matched two minutes later by a Cappagh point from a free. Cappagh continued to have the best of it for the next ten minutes but despite their pressure failed to score. Indeed the Larries backs, where Milly O’ Neill, Pam Grufferty and Carol Nolan were dominant, would go on to keep a clean sheet from play for the second game in a row. The Larries began to get their act together a bit better and closed the half much stronger but the only reward was a further point from Louise from a free leaving it 0-2 to 0-1 in favour of Laurence’s at half time.

In the second half Cappagh again started strongly and should have taken the lead when Orla Mulally seemed to have a goal at her mercy only to shoot narrowly wide. Louise Keatley stretched the Larries lead with a pointed free in the ninth minute and with Laurence’s having gained the upper hand it looked as if they would move on to a win but half way through the half a Cappagh free ended up in the Larrie’s net to give Cappagh a one point lead. Laurence’s forwards led by Louise Keatley and Niamh Breen piled on the pressure for the remainder of the match but a number of agonising misses negated their cause until a Carol Nolan point from a free in the 25th minute levelled the score. Laurence’s continued to press forward but despite some agonisingly near misses failed to achieve the winner.

With two rounds of the league played we have two draws and two points so all to play for. It is encouraging to see that the girls having their first season in the senior ranks are settling in and showing that they can do it at this level.
