Castle Villa

A tough game on sunday saw us share the points with a strong Ballycane team....Paul Redmond got us off to a flyer when he sidefooted home on 5 min after some great work on the left by Mark Kavanagh. We created several chances in the remainder of the first half but failed to convert any of them .....

What a start to the second half Vinny Dowling firing us into a 2 goal lead after just 1 min into the second period but as everyone knows you are at your most vulnerable for 5 min after scoring and we let our guard down and paid the price. A bit of a lucky break saw a ball break to an unmarked Ballycane player and he slotted the ball home to get the score back to 2-1. This gave the visitors the lift they needed and a bit of indecision in our box saw them head a bouncing ball over our advancing keeper to make it 2-2 shortly afterwards.

Vinny picked up his 2nd on 65mins to give us a 3-2 lead. We felt hard done by with 8mins remaining when Eoin Fogarty was blatantly held back when one on one with the keeper but we failed to get the decision and typically a quick break meant it was all square again!

Eoin never stopped running all game and when he found himself clean through in the box unselfishly he tried to clip the ball to an unmarked Roy Byrne at the back post only for the keeper to intercept.

We take loads of positives out of this game- it’s early days and with our new signings it takes a few games to gel. If we continue to create the amount of chances we have done in the last 2 games we will certainly score plenty of goals!

Next up is a trip to early pace setters Naas United who’ve won both of their opening games!

KDFL DIV.3 - Clongorey United 2-3 Castle Villa

Villa continued their unbeaten start to the season in this hard fought game with some good football from both sides. There were some good early exchanges, but it was Villa who took the lead on 26 minutes when Gary Mulhall was taken down for a penalty which was converted by Malcolm Kirwan. Villa had some good chances to extend their lead but were unable to take these, and went in one up at half time.

Clongorey started the second half brightly and were on level terms on 47 minutes with a cracking free kick which flew in to Jamie Horan’s top corner. Villa started to produce their best football now and were back in front after 65 minutes when Jason Kelly headed home a great Paul Lawler cross. Villa extended their lead to 3-1 in the 76th minute when Colm Kellyscored after good interplay between himself and Jordan Harmon. Clongorey were not finished yet, and fought back to make it 3-2 on 87 minutes, and pushed hard for an equaliser but were denied by some excellent defending from Gary Mulhall and Jason Kelly at the heart of the defence. Villa went on to win 3-2. Best performers were Jason Kelly, Paul Murphy and man of the match Gary Mulhall.
