The results of the recent Pike Fishing Competition in Athy (Sunday March 11th) are as follows: In first place was David Murphy. Second place was taken by Adrian Hyland and Thomas Zan secured third. Athy & District Angling Club will also host another sponsored Open Pike Fishing Competition on Sunday April 15th. Check in at Shaw’s car park from 10.00-10.30am. Fishing is from 11.00-4.00pm.Both seniors and juniors are welcome. Over €700 in prizes is up for grabs.

Resident Association Grant Scheme 2012

Athy Town Council invites applications for the annual grants scheme which assists Residents Associations for the maintenance and improvement of their estates. Grants are awarded towards expenses incurred on estate maintenance e.g. landscaping, flowerbeds, tree planting and other minor works. Funds for the scheme are limited and the level of grants awarded will be subject to demand. Application forms and particulars are available from: Athy Town Council, Rathstewart, Athy, Co. Kildare. Inland Waterways Association

The IWAI will hold a boat rally on the river barrow the weekend of May 11th 12th and 13th. If you are interested in helping with the organisation or taking part in some of the many events such as the raft race, please contact Kathleen Cross on 086-8979632 or myself on the above number.

Athy Town Council meets for it next monthly meeting on Wednesday 18th of April at 7pm in the Council offices. All monthly meeting are open to the General Public.

Athy Community First Responder

Athy Community First Responder is setting up in Athy and we need your help to help those close to you. Community First Responder Volunteers will be fully trained to perform CPR, to use an AED (Defibrillator) and perform Oxygen therapy. First Responders work in conjunction with the HSE to attend emergency calls received by the ambulance service and provide care until the ambulance arrives. The Farmers Market takes place every Sunday in Emily Square Athy from 10am till 2pm. This is the perfect event to purchase the very best of locally produce products.

Athy Community Arts Centre

Leslie Dowdall and Mike Hanrahan will be appearing at Athy Community Arts Centre on Saturday 14th of April at 8pm. One of Ireland’s leading female vocalists and singer songwriters, Leslie Dowdall first came to prominence with In Tua Nua, who fused Celtic tradition with rock.

With Leslie as lead vocalist , In Tua Nua recorded four albums and over a seven year period, played and toured with bands including: U2, Simple Minds, Bob Dylan and The Pretenders. They headlined tours in the USA, Holland, Italy, Germany as well as the UK and Ireland.

Leslie has also enjoyed critical acclaim as a solo artist with two CD projects. The first, No Guilt No Guile, featured the hit single ‘Wonderful Thing’ and the second, ‘Out There’ also featured the hit single ‘Freedom’ and a stunning version of the Jimi Hendrix classic ‘Angel’.

Her composition and chart hit ‘Wonderful Thing’, with string arrangement by Fiachra Trench, featured as the theme anthem for the RTE National Lottery TV commercial and National Daffodil Day. Leslie was voted Best Female Artist at the Heineken Hotpress Awards 1977.

She was lead vocalist on Ronan Hardiman’s Lord of the Dance creator albums, Anthem & Solas and in 1999 she featured in a series of Beatles tribute concerts conducted by Sir George Martin in The National Concert Hall, Dublin. Leslie supported Paul Brady on his epic 23 date gigs at Vicar Street, which also included guests such as Bonnie Raitt and Van Morrison.

She also features on Paul Brady’s album Songbook and live DVD. Leslie has worked in various areas of TV including drama, music, videos and live TV. In addition, she has presented in an eclectic mix of music in a six part series on RTE radio 1 titled ‘Songs for the Tempted’.

In the Autumn of 2007 she also presented ‘The Whoseday Club’ on RTE radio 1. Continuing work on her education workshop project Songcraft. Leslie teaches performance and singing skills to young, aspiring artists. In 2009/2010 she set up Summer School of Rock with fellow musicians Dave Hingerty (Frames) and Conor Brady (Gerry Fish & the Mudbug Club) in 2009 Leslie began a collaboration of writing and performing with Mike Hanrahan (ex Stocktons Wing).

Bertie Kiernan Memorial Raft Race

The annual Bertie Kiernan memorial raft race will take place on Sunday 13th at 2pm. The race will start at the boat slip and head down river to finish under the Cromaboo bridge. The event takes place as part of the annual Athy Water festival. Teams consist of four members per raft and all participants must wear a lifejacket.
