There is another reminder about a two day Residential Workshop which is being run at the Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise, on May 8 and May 9 specifically for people aged over 50 who are thinking about starting a business. The aim of this interactive two day Residential Workshop is to give entrepreneurs aged 50+ the opportunity to develop a business plan to guide the establishment of their new business. The Annual Cul Camps will be taking place once again this summer. There will be a Football Camp in Blessington GAA Grounds from Monday July 9- Friday July 13 and for the first time ever a Hurling Camp will take place in Blesington GAA Grounds from Monday July 23 – Friday July 27. Blessington Soccer Club will be holding their Annual Race Night in Murphy’s Lounge Blessington this Friday April 20 with the opening race under starters orders at 9 pm. This is one of the clubs main fundraisers during the year and a lot of time and effort is put into making it a success. The Club are looking for people to purchase horses at €10 and also to sponsor races. Businesses can also advertise in the Race Night Programme or be a sponsor. Race Nights are always great craic and who knows you could win a few euros on the horses. Local student of music Rachel Conlon from Blessington will be honoured at her final performance concert on May 17 at University of Limerick when Swedish traditional fiddlers dressed in their native costumes will accompany her on stage. Rachel has been described by the Swedes as their Irish music ambassador. Rachel taught music in Sweden as part of her degree course accompanied by fellow student Alan Reid all the way from Leitrim. Both received high recognition from the Swedish schools. As a result an exchange programme for students between the University of Limerick and Swedish Colleges will soon begin.
The death took place recently of Amelia Gobbett nee Healy Kilmalum Blessington. Amelia lost her very brave battle with a serious illness when she passed away in Larchfield Nursung Home Naas. Her remains were removed to St. Mary’s Church of Ireland for funeral service and her burial took place immediately afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. There was a large attendance at the funeral which was a fitting tribute to Amelia who was well known and well liked in the Blessington and surrounding area having lived in Blessington before her marriage.
Comhaltas County Headquarters has just announced that this year’s County Fleadh will be held in Bray on Sunday May 27. Comhaltas are trying to encourage participants from Blessington which now has its very own Comhaltas Group. So anyone in the Blessington area who is interested in taking part is asked to register as soon as possible.
A unique music festival will be taking place in Ballyknockan over the May Bank Holiday weekend. It will consist of musicians or bands formed by musicians solely from the area. It will include sessions from new bands in their teens and twenties to the well established bands that are well known to us all-Upload, SOS, Entourage, The Whole Hog to mention just a few. There could be an appearance, after their stint on Nationwide by Glyder and After Dark who have known to rock the night away at venues all over Ireland. On the Sunday the Hillbilly Festival Queen will be selected from the multitude of ladies who will be keen to preside over the preparations for this year’s Tractor Run on June 24th. All Ireland champions
Congratulations to Scoil Chaoimhin Naofa Hollywood who won the All Ireland Credit Union Schools Quiz for U’11’s. One hundred teams of four battled it out in the RDS Dublin under the watchful eye of Quizmaster Marty Whelan in the Grand Final recently. Over the past six months children from North and South of the country took part in knockout stages of the competition at local and regional level aiming to win a chance at competing in the National Final. Twenty-five thousand children were whittled down to four hundred children for the RDS climax. Scoil Chaoimhin Naofa Hollywood School represented Blessington & District Credit Union in the Quiz. Team members were Eoin Clarke, Dubhaltach Mc Sweeney, Robert Coyne and Finn Harney. Their Teacher was John Behan.
Blessington Citizens Information Centre is open in Blessington Library every Tuesday from1 pm – 4 pm and every Wednesday from 10 am – 12.30pm. They will give you free advice on a variety of subjects and no appointment is necessary. They also have a Legal Advice Bureau on the first and third Tuesday of the month.
The King & I
BYMDS presents the very popular musical ‘The King & I’ in the Tramway Theatre Blessington this Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
