The Department of Adult and Community Education at NUI Maynooth is holding an Open Day from 5-8pm on May 17 in Education House on the North Campus. At this event you can find out about what part- time certificate courses are available in interesting areas such as Addiction Studies, Creative Writing, Local Studies or Adult and Community Education. If you would like to try something more challenging you can also find out how you can build a degree that is designed to meet your needs and your timetable. Lectures on the Easter Rising

Dr Miriam Moffitt of the Department of History, NUI Maynooth, will give a series of eight lectures on the 1916 Rising every Wednesday evening at 7pm from May 2 to June 20 at the County Library, Tallaght. Stories for the Ear

Writers between the ages of 12 and 21 are invited to submit a short story for inclusion in the third volume of an audio showcase CD. 10 stories will be chosen for inclusion in ‘Stories for the Ear: Volume 3’

The ten Successful writers will have their story professionally recorded in the Platform4 Audio and Digital Media Studio, receive a once off payment of €120 for having their story included. In addition they will receive 10 copies of their story on CD for promotion of their work. Their work will also be showcased on the Kildare Arts Service Website

Closing date for applications is Friday 1st June 2012. 

To assist young writers in harnessing their literary talent, curator Neil Donnelly, will host a series of creative writing workshops in April and May across Kildare in secondary schools and your local library. Dates and times of these sessions will be available soon.

Microsoft winners

A team of three students from NUI Maynooth have won the Irish Microsoft Imagine Cup Software Design competition. The ‘DocTek’ team also won the Connected Health Challenge with their project concerning a cloud-based doctor-patient system. DocTek will be travelling to Sydney, Australia in July, where they will represent Ireland at the world finals.

The three students, Marie Farrell, Donal O’Sullivan and Cosmin Siclovan, along with their mentor David Kerr, from the computer science department at NUI Maynooth, were victorious in the national final ahead of 600 other competitors. The winning students come from a variety of programmes within the Computer Science Department.

Challenge race

The Maynooth Post Primary Parent-Teacher Association is planning a 10k Challenge to take place on Sunday May 20, starting at 10.30am. This will be run over a route

taking in the historic grounds of St Patrick’s College, Maynooth town and the majestic grounds of Carton Hotel/ Estate. All proceeds will go towards the development of playing pitches, running and walking track in association with the GAA at Moyglare Road, Maynooth. These proposed new facilities will be of benefit to the whole community. Entry fee is E20 up to May 1. Thereafter the late fee is E25. You can download and application form at

Rusty Fixtures gig

The Rusty Fixtures and guests will be making an appearance at the Creative Arts Centre in Coates Lane on May 17. The Rusty Fixtures are a 5 piece band based in Wexford. The band formed in mid-2010 and began gigging in early 2011. In mid-2011 their focus firmly shifted towards original music. The band consists of Brian (Vocals, Acoustic Guitar), Mary (Vocals, Keys), John (Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals), Rory (Bass, Backing Vocals) and Kyle (Drums, Backing Vocals). Their sound has been described as Folk, with strong Reggae and Alternative influences.

Admission to the Maynooth gig is E5 and doors are open at 9pm.

First Communion

Pupils from Second Class at the Presentation Girls’ School will receive their First Holy Communion on Saturday May 12 in the Parish Church at 11.00 a.m.

Classic Directors

The Classic Director Series of screenings and workshops are well under way in Maynooth Library. On May 12 there will be a screening and workshop based on the films of Douglas Sirk, On June 9 it’s the turn of Sam Peckinpah to come under the spotlight, while the films of Martin Scorsese will be the subject of the final workshop on July 7.

Summer Soccer School

There will be an eFlow Summer Soccer School based in Maynooth Town’s grounds on the Rathcoffey Road this year from August 13-17. There is an early booking fee of E89. Included in the cost is a free kit, backpack and soccer ball. Booking links are on the club website at

Bealtine Festival films

On May 15 at twelve noon there will be a special showing of “An American in Paris” (1951) in the Library. This is perhaps one of the best ever dance musicals. Gene Kelly stars as the young artist who finds love in the French capital. Featuring many famous Gershwin numbers the film deservedly won six academy awards, including Best Picture.

Take a walk

Maynooth Hillwalkers is a locally based group which encourages members to explore the great outdoors in the company of other enthusiastic walkers. The group organises frequent outing to Wicklow, although they also go further afield. The group is organising a moderate hike at Ballylow Woods on Sunday May 12. The distance will be 11km with a height gain of 280m. The meeting point is the Blessington Monument at 9.30am. the club will be organising an introductory coastal route hike later in May.
