Evening of local Heritage

On Wednesday 16 May, Carita O’Leary will present a talk on the history of one of Clane’s very precious but sometimes forgotten inheritances. The historic Church of Saint Michael and All Angels at Millicent, because of its links to the Pre-Raphaelite and the Art Nouveau art styles demands better recognition as a unique architectural exemplar. Carita will outline the many features of the church which today make this lovely edifice so unique in Ireland and this awareness can only serve to increase our appreciation for St Michael’s wonderful design, decoration and architecture. There are many features of the church’s decoration in particular which are unique. The Hiberno-Romanesque architecture is supplemented by wall-mounted sgraffito decorated panels and an elaborately enamelled ceiling. These remarkable works of art will be fully explored in the talk which will also introduce us to the kindly benefactor Thomas Cooke-Trench, who had the generosity to gift this epoch making building to Clane and its citizenry. The church was consecrated on 29 September 1883 and since then it has played a very important role in the history of the Church of Ireland locally. Its artistic uniqueness is very much appreciated and Carita’s talk is eagerly awaited by all who value Clane’s rich heritage. The occasion should not be missed, particularly by anyone interested in Clane’s hidden architectural heritage. The talk, which is open to all, will be held in the GAA Centre Prosperous Road, Clane, on Wednesday 16 May next at 8:00pm. Be sure to come along and enjoy a great evening of local heritage – all are very welcome!
