The Late Colm Hackett
Much sadness for the Hackett family on the death of Colm Hackett, late of Broadleas, Ballymore Eustace. Survived by his wife Mairead, children Deirdre and Cian, Colm was diagnosed with Motor Neurone disease last year and bore his illness with calm dignity. A quiet man who had a great love of the great outdoors, a huge crowd turned out to support the family during his wake at home, before he made his final journey to St Kevin’s Church, Hollywood where he was laid to rest on Friday last. A gentleman always, the late Colm Hackett, may he rest in peace, amen.
Disappointment for Ireland’s senior ladies rugby team on St Patrick’s Day when their match in the RBS Championship ended with a 23 – 6 victory to England. However, the final score-line was not indicative of the play, with Ireland having contained their opponents in a superb first half performance ending in 6 – 6. On resumption of play, the Irish women again matched the world’s number two team but after an hour’s play, England scored a penalty, then a scrum and pulled away from the Irish hopefuls.
The English backs were impenetrable despite some impressive play from Niamh Kavanagh, niece of Gus Kavanagh of Wellfield.
Ballymore is proud of Liffeydale’s Jenny Murphy who is now on the team, our first rugby national player.
