Athy Town Council is currently investigating reports that state forests and recreational lands, in particular Mullaghreelan Woods near Kilkea, are to be sold to private investors.
Athy Cllr Mary O’Sullivan raised the matter at a recent town council meeting.
“I have been reading that local forests are to be sold to private investors,” she said and raised concerns about nearby Mullaghreelan Woods.
“What would we do if that place was taken away. It would be a sad day,” added the Fine Gael councillor.
Cllr Richard Daly agreed. “It might seem like scare tactics but the sale of forestry has been identifed in the McCarthy Report to pay the banks. I think our local authority should send a clear and strong message not to go near our natural resources.”
Cllr Mark Wall requested the council should send a letter to the Environment Department with its concerns.
