Plans are under way for a possible cycle trial along the River Barrow.
Currently a tender is out for a feasability study for developing a cycling route along the River Barrow from Monasterevin, to Athy and on to St Mullins in County Carlow.
According to the tender notice, the appointed consultant will be required to provide a detailed technical specification for developing a class two cycling trail on the River Barrow in accordance with the recommendations of the National Trails Office Report ‘Classification and Grading for Recreational Trails’, while having due regard to the existing River Barrow walking route and to heritage, environmental and aesthetic considerations.
The tender was issued by the Carlow Development Board earlier this month.
Athy Town Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Richard Daly welcomed this news. “This would be absolutely excellent. It is another way of exploiting our waterways.
“It would be terrific and we would certainly be supporting it.”
