Athy court house
A man who was before Athy District Court on Tuesday, April 9, last, for driving dangerously while drunk and uninsured was sentenced to 10 months.
Lee Needham, of 100 Abbeyfields, Balitore came to the attention of gardai on October 7, 2018, after he was involved in a road traffic collision in Balitore.
The court heard that the defendant failed to stop at a dangerous junction stop sign and collided with another car on the other side of the road. Both drivers got out of their cars and were very disorientated at the time. The defendant then got back in his car and drove on a distance.
Gardai arrived to the scene. The defendant seemed intoxicated at the time and later failed a breath test. The court heard that he was very co-operative with gardai. The solicitor for the defendant, Conal Boyce, said that his client had been in an argument with his partner and got into the car "still thick". He drove at speed, lost control and both cars were write-offs.
Mr Needham works in Leixlip and pays a €900 a month mortgage on his home. He was disqualified at the time of driving and he had drink taken. He was also uninsured at the time. He was given five months for dangerous driving and five months for drink driving and disqualified from driving for four years.
