A call has been made for the council to develop Moone High Cross dubbed the 'monastic jewel' in Kildare's crown by a local councillor.

Cllr Brian Dooley said the cross was ranked in the top 1000th in the world at this month's area meeting held on Monday, January 21.

“If this cross was in Kerry or Clare you would be paying to go see it and to park there,” he said.

“Not that there is any where to park there at the moment. We should go to Kildare Failte and see what they have to say on it.” The meeting heard that there are currently no plans or budget allocation set aside for the development of this attraction.

Members were told however that there is a desire to improve the tourism attractions across the county but this must be matched by capital funding.

Cllr Dooley said in response that the attraction should be developed from a tourism and infrastructural perspective.

“It is ranked in the top 1000th high crosses in the world,” he added.
