Kildare man in high speed car chase jailed for dangerous driving

A Kildare man who was before Athy District Court for dangerous driving while uninsured was jailed for ten months on Tuesday, October 23.

Jamie Donovan (25) with an address listed as 15 Brownstown Manor, Brownstown, Curragh came to the attention of gardai on 24 May 2016 at Kilmead in Athy at 4.05 pm. He was spotted driving dangerously by an unmarked patrol car and a chase ensued.

The court heard that the defendant was doing speeds of 130 kph and 160 kph in a 100 kph zone. The patrol car had difficulty keeping up with him.

The chase went on for 4 kms and the vehicle was eventually stopped.  €10 worth of cannabis was also found on his possession at Fontstown in Athy and he was driving with no insurance at the time. The court heard that he was on drugs at the time and he had a lot of family issues and upheaval.

"To drive like that at that time of day with the traffic is not good," judge Desmond Zaidan said. 

He was given five months in custody for dangerous driving and five months for driving with no insurance.

He was disqualified from driving for two years.
