Four months for theft for Athy mum-of-two

An Athy woman was jailed for four months for theft at Athy District Court on Tuesday.

Mary Ellen Carthy with an address listed as 59 Castlepark, Athy came to the attention of gardai on August 5, 2017 for theft of four pairs of runners worth €275 at the - Nike Store Kildare Village . And on February 11, 2017 at Ralph Lauren in Kildare Village for the theft of a polo shirt worth €139.

And lastly on February 15, 2017 at Aldi on Monasterevin Road in Athy for the theft of clothing worth €143.83. The court heard that the defendant is a 20 year old mother of two young children. She has four previous convictions. The court heard some of the thefts were for essential items as the defendant was homeless at the time and had no source of income.

Judge Desmond Zaidan sentenced her to four months for the theft of the runners and four months consecutive for the polo shirt theft and three months consecutive for the theft in Aldi.
