Athy man sentenced to nine months for family feud

An Athy man was sent to prison for nine months at Athy District Court on Tuesday for his involvement in a family feud in Castlepark two years ago.

Tommy Connell with an address listed as 1317 Townspark was sentenced to three months for threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour and six months for failing to comply with a garda's direction in Castlepark on 10 September 2016.

Seven people were sentenced in relation to the same incident at Athy court two weeks ago.

The row broke out between the two families in the estate.

The argument ended with a near riot on the green area and several gardai had to be called to the area.

The incident started late on Friday night, September 9, 2016 at Castlepark, Athy, and went on until the early hours of Saturday morning, when it spilled out into the square of the housing estate.

The court heard at a previous sitting that it took two hours for gardai to calm the dispute.

Both families had been at a party together the night before and the court heard that a lot of drink had been taken.

The defendant was not in attendance on that day as he was before Naas circuit court dealing with a separate matter.

A representative of the DARA project -Drug Free and Recovery Assistance Programme- was in court last Tuesday to say the defendant was involved in the programme and responding well.

He told Judge Desmond Zaidan the defendent “is now only really seeing that he needs to change”.
