Three months for Athy man who locked horns with friend in the bookies

A man who was before Athy District Court on Tuesday after he 'locked horns' with a friend in a local bookies while under the influence of tablets was sentenced to three months in prison

Derek Leigh, with an address listed as 95 Coney Meadows, Athy came to the attention of gardai on February 13, 2017 at Boyles Sports in Athy.

The court heard that the defendant entered the bookies at 5.30pm and assaulted a man sitting inside.

The court then heard that the  man immediately defended himself and the two proceeded to lock horns, which was all captured on CCTV.

The bookies was full at the time of the incident.

The solicitor for the defendant Jackie McManus told the court that they were old friends who have since made up.

She said her client, who is currently serving a prison sentence on another matter, was under the influence of tablets bought from the street at the time.

Judge Zaidan asked when the defendant is due out of prison and was told March 21, 2018.

He then sentenced him to three months.
