Cllr Peter Melrose (SD) announces resignation from Kildare County Council

Cllr Melrose (SD) served the Maynooth LEA since being elected to the council in 2024
Social Democrats councillor, Peter Melrose has today announced his decision to step down from his role as a county councillor on Kildare County Council.
Serving the Maynooth LEA, Melrose expressed deep gratitude to the local communities of the area who voted for him in the 2024 local elections.
Speaking today on the decision, Melrose said: "Representing the people of Kildare has been an honour and a privilege. I became a councillor to champion change in our community, advocate for local services, and ensure voices of young families like mine were heard clearly at municipal and county level.
"However, over time, the volume of work and the ever-increasing demands placed on local representatives have grown to an unsustainable level. Balancing the caseload, late evening and weekend meetings, and council commitments and deadlines with my professional life as a primary school teacher, and family life as a husband and father, has become an unmanageable challenge.
"The role of a local councillor has evolved significantly, and fundamental, systemic reforms are needed to make local democracy work better for communities. Councillors need greater decision-making powers, more oversight on executive actions, and a remuneration that reflects the full-time nature of the role.
“Current proposed local government reform measures will not bring the improvements that are desperately needed. I hope that meaningful changes can be made to support future local representatives.”
Melrose extended heartfelt thanks to Catherine Murphy, former Social Democrats TD for Kildare North, and credited her as the catalyst for his journey into politics.
Melrose also expressed sincere gratitude to current SocDems TD for Kildare North Aidan Farrelly, Cllrs Nuala Killeen, Paula Mulroe, Chris Pender, and Claire O’Rourke, and the SocDems Kildare North branch, for their friendship, collegiality, and support.
The formal resignation has been submitted to the Chief Executive of Kildare County Council. Details regarding co-option to fill the vacant seat will be managed in accordance with council procedures.
