The products present a risk to health as the sand inside the bean bags may contain asbestos. Asbestos is a banned substance across the EU because it poses a risk to health. HSE Public Health advice is that there is low risk to human health from these sand products based on current information.

The brand is Smyths Toys. The article number is 233254. The barcode is 5390946117845. The products were available for purchase from Smyths Toys stores.

What to do:

The CCPC is advising consumers who have the product in their home to do the following:

  • Stop using the product immediately.
  • If the sand is still packaged place the product in a heavy-duty plastic bag, seal it securely, label it clearly and store it in a secure location out of reach of children.
  • If the product is punctured and the sand inside is accessible, clean sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Wear gloves and a protective FFP2 face mask or equivalent. Do not use a vacuum cleaner for clean-up. Double bag the sand, gloves, mask and cloths. Seal it securely, label it clearly and store it in a secure location out of reach of children.
  • Prior to disposal contact Smyths to request a refund.

You can view a list of civic amenity sites available for consumers to dispose of products they believe may be affected.

The CCPC continues to engage with the Health Service Executive (HSE), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), as required.
