American billionaire and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has bought a luxury castle in County Waterford.

As first reported by the Irish Times, Zuckerberg has purchased Strancally Castle in the west of the county.

The co-founder of Facebook completed the purchase of the 440-acre estate on the banks of the River Blackwater a number of weeks ago.

While the price paid by Zuckerberg is unknown at this point, the Irish Times has estimated that the estate could have been sold for between €20 million and €30 million.

The castle has undergone a full restoration over the past 20 years and Zuckerberg is expected to continue with these improvements.

The three-storey building, which was built in the early 19th century, extends to 16,000 square feet.

The castle is close to Ballynatray House, which is owned by British billionaire James Dyson.

The Irish Times also reports that Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan are expected to continue living in the United States and intend to use Strancally Castle when visiting Ireland.

Meta, which is the parent company of social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, has had its European headquarters in Ireland since 2009.

The company currently employs approximately 1,500 people in this country.
