Paddy Power shops in Kildare could be at risk over latest review

Paddy Power currently operates 196 shops in the Republic of Ireland
Paddy Power has not confirmed whether any of its Co Kildare outlets will be among up to 100 betting shops being reviewed for closure across Ireland and the UK.
The bookmaker announced plans on Thursday to review up to 100 of its shops, putting up to 400 jobs at risk.
Paddy Power has shops in Naas, Newbridge, Celbridge, Maynooth and Leixlip.
The announcement could result in the closure of around one fifth of Paddy Power’s entire shop estate.
Paddy Power currently operates 196 shops in the Republic of Ireland, employing 935 people, while a further 310 outlets across Northern Ireland and Britain employ 1,374 workers.
The company has not yet identified which individual shops could be affected by the latest review, meaning the future of Paddy Power outlets in Co Kildare remains uncertain.
The announcement comes less than a year after the bookmaker confirmed a further round of closures.
In November 2025, Flutter UK and Ireland, which owns Paddy Power, announced the closure of 57 shops across Ireland and the UK, including 28 outlets in the Republic of Ireland.
Paddy Power has previously closed outlets in Kildare, including its Athy shop, which shut as part of an earlier programme of closures.
Flutter UK and Ireland said employees affected by the latest review would be offered redeployment opportunities where possible.
A company spokesperson said: “We are incredibly proud of our high street estate, and it remains a key part of our business in communities across the UK and Ireland. Unfortunately, we have had to take the extremely difficult decision to conduct this review.”
The company said the high street trading environment had been challenging for several years because of rising costs, competition, economic uncertainty and the shift towards online betting.
It also pointed to the impact of higher gambling taxes announced in last year's UK Budget.
“Our immediate priority at this time is to support those colleagues affected by this announcement,” the spokesperson said.
Paddy Power was founded in Ireland in 1988 following the merger of three Irish bookmakers and has since become part of Flutter Entertainment, the world's largest online betting and gaming company.
Flutter also owns brands including Betfair, Sky Bet and FanDuel.
The company has yet to announce which outlets will be affected by the latest review, with further details expected once the process has been completed.
