NTA plan for 15% bus and train fare hike condemned for impact on Kildare commuters

The proposed increases are planned to come into effect from January 2027 under the new fare structures announced by the NTA
Kildare South and Labour Party TD Mark Wall has condemned the National Transport Authority’s (NTA) plans to introduce a 15% price hike on bus and train fares.
The proposed increases are planned to come into effect from January 2027 under the new fare structures announced by the NTA and will impact commuters travelling in the Dublin Commuter Zone which includes Kildare towns such as Kildare Town, Newbridge and Kilcullen. This fare increase will apply to bus services operated by Bus Éireann, Go-Ahead Ireland, and commuter rail services operated by Irish Rail.
Deputy Wall said: “I utterly condemn the plan by the NTA to increase bus and train fares by a dramatic 15% and in some cases 30%. Any decision to increase public transport fares is a direct attack on workers who are barely getting by as it is. In a cost of living crisis, we should be encouraging more people to use public transport and make it more affordable.
“This price hike will only push more people into their cars, trapped on jam-packed motorways adding to the commuter misery. We have already seen failure to invest in developing public transport in rural Ireland with the lack of progress for an hourly train service in Kildare.
“Government must not allow this 15% price hike to go ahead. Workers and families can’t take anymore.”
