It’s been described as the best night out the club and local community had in years.
Raheens GAA club, from Caragh village hosted a Strictly Come Dancing night in the Killashee House Hotel on Sunday, March 16.
A thousand people attended the event, club secretary Shane Malone told the Leinster Leader, “and everybody left happy”.
The club members were expected to sit down last night to work out how much they made from the event, but Club Chairman Shane Power was in no doubt that of greater importance than the money was the way “it brought a great sense of community spirit, and it brought everybody together”.
“The whole village was there,” he said.
The club say they are happy that fundraising targets have been met.
The winner of the event was a Finnish man, Jani Niskanen, who has been living there for some years, who danced with popular local hairdresser Barbara Connolly.
“The long nights of training in Caragh NS gym really did pay off,” the club’s PRO Thomas Lawler said.
“The night had a real ‘red carpet event’ feel to it,” he added.
The evening was hosted by Ian Kelly and the judge panel was Mary Dunne, Patsy Power and celebrity judge Gillian Quinn.
The choreographers and directors were Alicia Grills-Grant and Rosie Watson.
