Redwood take second spot

With league leaders Coill Dubh suffering an unexpected defeat at the hands of Straffan this win sees Redwood move into second place just a point adrift of the leaders and with a game in hard, writes Michael Casey.
Having registered an impressive win away over Barnhall Rovers midweek Redwood were not lacking in confidence and they quickly gained the upper hand in a keenly contested joust at The Bawnogues.
Redwood always looked like scoring through the dangerous Stephen Noone whose pace was causing problems all afternoon for the home side.
Redwood were unlucky not to take the lead from a set piece midway through the half after Stephen Noone had been fouled. Sean Croke had taken responsibility for the free kick and placed the ball just inches over the bar as the ‘keeper was well beaten.
The visitor’s patience paid off shortly afterwards when Alan Bennett was fouled and Stephen Noone stepped up for the resulting free kick. He drilled the ball low and hard and found the bottom corner with a great finish.
Kilcock responded well after going behind and Redwood had Ciaran Killally to thank for keeping the home side scoreless as he made a great double save to deny Kilcock.
It was Kilally’s clearance that led to Redwoods second as he found Barry Forde. He picked out Alan Bennett and his superb ball to Stephen Noone saw the midfielder finish clinically, giving Kilcock ‘keeper Paddy Connell no chance.
Kilcock came out brightly at the start of the second half and Redwood relied on some excellent defending at times to keep the home side at bay. In particular Callum Edwards and Patrick McBennett made some great challenges when required. However the home side were back in the game on the hour when a defender handled under pressure from Gavin Dalton and referee Trevor Gleeson had no option but to point to the spot. Eoin Moriarity gave Killaly no chance with a sweetly struck penalty.
Kilcock continued to apply pressure and Redwood needed a great tackle from Stephen Bolger at right back to prevent Leon Glennon netting an equaliser.
As the game approached the final five minutes Redwood looked strong at the back and when Stephen Noone found himself on the end of another through ball he was brought down in the box as he looked certain to score. He took the resulting spot kick and scored to complete his hat trick and ensure all three points for his side.
Stephen Noone put in a man of the match performance for the winners while Stephen FitzGerald and Chris O’Meara impressed for the home side.
