Search begins for the next generation of Irish Paralympic athletes

Waiting for Video...

Just a few short weeks after the successes of London 2012, Irish Paralympic sport opened its doors to prospective athletes at a Paralympics Talent Search Event, supported by Cadbury, held at University College Dublin’s Sport Centre.

Over 400 people attended the successful event, which aimed to encourage people with a physical disability to get involved in sport, and to unearth potential Irish talent for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Athletes from Ireland’s most successful Paralympic Team were present, including medalists Catherine Walsh, Mark Rohan, Helen Kearney and Michael McKillop, alongside 18 exhibiting sports and various demonstrations.

Amongst the sports on display at the event were Archery, Athletics, Boccia, Cycling, Equestrian, Football 5-a-Side, Football 7-a-Side, Judo, Powerlifting, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Triathlon, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby and Wheelchair Tennis, amongst others.

Double Paralympic gold medallist, hand-cyclist Mark Rohan, was on hand to give advice to some of the aspiring Paralympic athletes in attendance: “It’s great to think that the team’s success in London will inspire others with a disability to try Paralympic sport. Given the level of raw talent on show, I’ve no doubt we will be seeing some of the new faces from today’s event at the Paralympic Games in Rio 2016! ”

The sponsorship of the event by Cadbury forms a natural extension of the brand’s sponsorship of the Irish Paralympic and Olympic Teams at London 2012.
