LEIXLIP youngster Gavin Colton, pictured below, could very well find himself in Milan with the 'Special One' after he made it through to the final ten of Sky 1 reality TV series Football's Next Star.
The talented centre back, who plays his club football with Cherry Orchard, beat off stiff competition from thousands of young players and caught the eye of Inter Milan youth coaches Marco Monti and Paolo Migliavacca.
Colton is one of three Irish player through to the final and in with the chance of winning a contract with Jose Mourinho's Serie A champions Inter Milan.
The Leixlip lad, son of Valerie and Gerry Colton, is currently captain of the Cherry Orchard Under 16 team and his club manager Christy Johnson is in no way surprised at his success on the show.
"He has the talent but more importantly he has the mentality. Gavin comes from a lovely family, he's a good mixer and a good communicator and that's why I made him my captain," admitted the Cherry Orchard Under 16 boss.
Colton began his playing career with Confey FC and at Under 10 level he moved to Leixlip United before making the switch to the Dublin and District School Boy League. The Confey College transition year student has his father Gerry to thank for his success on the show after he registered his son for an audition at the AUL complex in Dublin back in June of last year.
"My dad mention it to be. He booked me in for a trial and the whole thing has been amazing, it's such a change to what I am used to," admitted the amiable Colton.
He added: "It's amazing working alongside the like of Jamie Redknapp and Jose Mourihno because they are people you look up to on the TV."
Gavin, along with the nine other finalists, will fly to Italy where they have just over a month to prove they have what it takes to make it in Italian football. They will live in a luxury villa beside spectacular Lake Como, learn the language, immerse themselves in the culture and integrate themselves with the Inter Milan youth team. Former greats such as Luis Figo, Patrick Vieira and Mourinho himself will offer invaluable tips during their stay.
Throughout the show Colton will be mentored by former Liverpool, Tottenham and England star and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp.
The finalists must live and breathe football as they are put through their paces at Inter Milan's world-famous academy Interello. The Inter coaches will be constantly assessing their soccer skills, scrutinising every pass, tackle and goal.
Each week the player who fails to impress Inter coach Marco Monti will be shown the red card - their dream of playing for Inter Milan left in tatters.
Football is all Gavin Colton has time for these days and it's not only 'Football's Next Star' that is keeping him busy. Later this month he is off to South Africa for a tournament with the Dublin and District Schoolboy League Under 16 selection and on his return he is expected to travel to Wales for a trial with Championship side Cardiff City.
Cherry Orchard have a habit of producing stars; Andy Reid plied his schoolboy trade with the club. Could Gavin Colton be the next star to emerge from the Ballyfermot based club? Tune in and find out.
