Over 600 cyclists take to the roads of Kildare last Sunday in support of the Marie Keating Foundation.

The Marie Keating Foundation, in association with Naas Cycling Club, hosted the 11th annual Martin Earley Tour of Kildare cycle on Sunday last.

The cycle, which featured 100 kilometres, 50 kilometres and 20 kilometres tours, was once again fronted by Martin Earley, Tour de France and Giro d’Italia stage winner.

The event was proudly supported by Naas Cycling Club, Eurocycles and The Irish Daily Mail.

The Tour of Kildare started ten years ago, back in 2002, with about 20 cyclists taking part but has grown steadily over the years with just over 600 cyclists taking part this year.

After Sunday’s race, which began and finished at the Naas Court Hotel, there was a fun filled barbeque and the congratulations medals were handed out.

The event organisers wish to thank Martin Earley, Marks and Spencer’s, the Frame Shop in Naas, Carmel, Dave and Paul Cahill, the Higgins family, Naas Town Council, Lance Connolly and Naas Cycling Club and Alfie Montague, the motor cycle marshalls, An Garda Siochanna, Ballygowan, United Biscuits, Eurocycles, The Irish Daily Mail, Naas Court Hotel, North Kildare Rugby Club and all of the wonderful volunteers who ran the feed stations on the day.

“This event really has gone from strength to strength and it is really wonderful to see so many people here who take part every year, as well as some cyclists who are taking part for the very first time.

“We are so very grateful to our sponsors and to everyone who volunteers to help us to make sure the cycle is a success,” said Linda Keating, director of fundraising, the Marie Keating Foundation.

The Marie Keating Foundation raises much needed funds for cancer education and support for both men and women across Ireland.

This work includes a community information service which reaches out to the public with key messages around health promotion and the importance of early detection in the fight against cancer.
