In form Sarsfields inflict another defeat on Moores

Sarsfields continue to move in the right direction but Moorefield are still looking for any sort of form after this latest setback, with the championship now less than a month away, writes Ger McNally.

There could be no complaints that the visitors to Moorefield were full value for their six point win by the final whistle and John Crofton can only be delighted with the way his team are playing at the moment.
Caomhin McDonnell lorded things at midfield while up front, Padraig Brennan and Ray Cahill had the skill and finishing ability that Moorefield seem to be lacking at the moment.
Jack Sheedy’s team were never once in front during the game and this loss, hot on the heels of losing to Celbridge and Athy in their previous two games, sees this Moorefield in their worst run of form in many a year.
They will no doubt point to the fact that young players like Adam Tyrell, James Murray and Eddie Heavey are getting valuable experience but any sport is about results and Moorefield just aren’t getting them at the moment.
Of course they will be stronger come championship time, and who knows, perhaps they might be able to creep under the radar having been strong favourites in the past few years but certainly, they will need to improve ahead of the crunch championship game against Athy.
Despite being the away side, Sarsfields laid out their intentions from early on and came flying out of the blocks. They scored the first four points of the game inside the opening eight minutes as a shellshocked Moorefield tried to maintain their composure.
Points from Keith Duane and Gareth Duffy steadied their nerves and they were handed a glorious chance to get back into the game on the 14th minute. After Gavin Slicker kept out Eddie Heavey’s shot, David Duggan prevented him from reaching the rebound by dragging him around the neck. Noel McKenna had no option but to award a penalty but Frank Hannifey could only drive it over the bar.
Within six minutes, Sarsfields had a penalty of their own at the far end with McKenna again making the correct decision to award the set piece. This time it was Ger Naughton who was the guilty party after he impeded Declan McKenna. Ray Cahill sent Tom Corley the wrong way with his kick to put his team five points up by the 20th minute.
Caomhin McDonnell added a terrific score but Moorefield had their best spell of the game in the closing stages of the first half. Two Hannifey frees along with points from David Whyte and Ciaran Kelly came in a three minute spell to cut the gap to two points with two minutes to play.
Moorefield weren’t able maintain that level of play though and McDonnell and Robbie Confrey pointed in the last couple of minutes to leave Sarsfields 1-8 to 0-7 ahead at the break.
The second half brought more of the same as Sarsfields continued to have the greater quality in attack.
The introduction of Philly Wolfe briefly brought some life to Moorefield. He scored with his first touch in the 46th minute and Whyte then pointed a 45 three minutes later to leave three between the teams.
At that stage of the game you would normally expect Moorefield to kick on but they were outscored by 0-4 to 0-1 in the final ten minutes as Sarsfields recorded an excellent win.
