Hurling and football fixture clash
THERE will be no Sunday Game cameras, no TV3 presence and definitely no Seanie Johnston as the Kildare SHC completes its first round proper with two games scheduled for this Sunday (14 July) with a 6 pm throw-in, writes TOMMY CALLAGHAN.
So as the Kildare supporters exit from Breffni Park on Sunday, hopefully after booking their place in the next round of the football qualifiers, senior hurling champions, Celbridge will be preparing to take on Clane, in the losers group of the championship in Sarsfields while at the same time, in the winners’ section Naas and Confey will be squaring up to one another in Ardclough.
The other two games in this week’s SHC are down for Friday evening in Naas, Ardclough v Coill Dubh (7.30) while on Saturday Éire Óg Corrachoill play Leixlip (losers group) at 4.30.
With all the fuss and furore over Mr. Johnston’s 35 second cameo for Coill Dubh recently, all the media hype ranging from the RTE six o’clock news to the Sunday Game, one can but scratch one’s head in absolute amazement that the hurling board would now fix SHC games for the same day as Kildare footballers are playing in Breffni Park in Cavan in the football qualifiers.
Little or no regard shown to hurling supporters who will travel to Cavan, not to mention players involved who will now be forced to miss the game in Breffni Park.
Hardly the best way to promote hurling in the county I would have thought.
