Fun run success for Rathcoffey GAA Club

Spring made a welcome appearance in Rathcoffey on Saturday, February 16 for the now annual Rathcoffey GAA ten kilometre fun run.
This year’s run was held in association with Console, the Suicide Awareness Charity, and attracted 300 participants.
As usual there was a great mix of serious and casual runners, old and young, including one 73 year old man who was running with two replaced hips!
Easily the youngest participant was seven week old Paddy Duffy Junior, who went around the course in blissful slumber stretched out in his pram.
The club’s members and players turned out in force to help register the runners, refresh them before and after, marshal the course and car park and help to ensure that the runners left Rathcoffey after a really enjoyable morning.
Participants registered from the night before and were provided with a number which included a chip and pin timing device. Starting from the club’s reserve pitch, the runners set off on a course that took them towards Maynooth before swinging back to Smithstown and back for Rathcoffey via Johninstown.
Although clouds threatened on and off during the morning, the run finished in glorious sunshine back at the clubhouse.
In the men’s race, Stephen Cleary opened up an early lead and ultimately came home in front, in a time of 33.01 minutes. Stephen finished ten seconds ahead of Kevin Baker who in turn was the same margin ahead of David’s Fitzpatrick.
In the women’s race, Mary Hanley came home first in a time of 40.34, over a minute ahead of Catherine Kelly in second and Orna Dilworth in third. Niall Fagan and Paddy Duffy presented the prizes back in the clubhouse afterwards, where club’s catering team provided tea, coffee, soup and sandwiches to all in the sports hall.
There was a super atmosphere around Rathcoffey on the day while the club received great support from the local Gardaí, first responders, the motorcycle outriders, road marshals, water marshals, the club’s catering crew and registrars.
This event is going from strength to strength and promises to be even bigger and better next year.
