Feeley and Dunne lead Athy to SFL win over Clane

Athy came to Conneff Park on Sunday afternoon and continued their climb up the Leinster Leadeer SFL Division 1 table with a well deserved win against the home side.
Athy: 1-16
Clane: 1-9
The platform for the victory came from their control of the midfield area where Kevin Feely and Pat Dunne were on top. It was James Eaton who got the game’s first score in the second minute with a converted free. Athy’s Danny O’Keefe added a second score from play before Hugh Mahon put the visitors three clear after five minutes.
From the kick out Clane got their first score of the game when Karl Martin pointed. Athy, who were playing some attractive football at this stage, responded quickly with another score from Danny O’Keeffe.
The game settled after the fast pace opening, it was in the 12th minute when Hugh Mahon got his second score of the game with a well taken point from play.
Athy where now 0-5 to 0-1 in front, but it was Clane who responded the best and took the game to Athy for the next ten minutes.
Points from Stephen Lyons and Robbie Dunne got them back into the game and after a fine move by the all whites it was Cathal Geoghegan who finished to the Athy net. From the resulting kick out it was David Lyons who finished with a fine point from play. Clane were now in front (1-4 to 0-5) after 21 minutes.
Athy picked up again and Kevin Feeney ran straight at the heart of the Clane defence to finish to the Clane net. Athy now back in front 1-5 to 1-4. Athy finished out the half to two more points both from frees which were converted by James Eaton.
At half time the scoreboard read, Athy 1-7 to Clane 1-5.
Clane started the second half in spirited fashion and Robbie Dunne pointed after three minutes but Athy responded quickly with a score from Danny O’Keeffe in the fifth minute of the half.
The game moved from end to end before Athy were awarded a free in the eighth minute, which Liam McGovern converted. James Eaton was on hand soon after to finish with a point from play.
Athy were in no mood to give up the two league points on offer and it was wing back Ross Bell who added another score from play ten minutes in to the half. Liam McGovern with a free and Kevin Feely from play increased the Athy lead. Athy’s James Eaton pointed another free after a fine move by the men in red.
In the 24th minute it was Athy’s Emmanuel Kennedy who came forward to put another score on the board.
Robbie Dunne in 25th minute and Stephen Lyons on 28th converted two frees for the Clane men’s cause.
But it was left to Athy’s Danny O’Keeffe to get the final score of the game in stoppage time to give Athy a well deserved win and take the two league points back to the south of the county.
Athy ran out winners on a score line of 1-16 to 1-9.
