Niall Carew

Niall Carew has been named as the new Waterford senior football manager following a meeting with Co. Board officials this morning (Saturday 17 November) writes TOMMY CALLAGHAN.

The St. Kevin’s man will be formally ratified by the Waterford Co. Board at a meeting scheduled for this Monday evening.

Carew, who has been given a two year term, has been a selector with Kieran McGeeney for the past five years, resigned four weeks ago, soon after his re-appointed was made by Kildare GAA Co. Board.

He is expected to name one of McGeeney’s former backroom members, Noel Mallon, as his strength and conditioning coach, while Tony Kelly who successfully managed the Kildare junior side to a provincial title, as well as to an All Ireland final, is expected to be named as a selector. Two local selectors will be added in the coming week.

Speaking exclusively to the Leinster Leader today, Carew said he was “looking forward to the challenge and once the appointment is ratified I will finalise my backroom team and meet with the players for their first training session on Saturday next.
