The County Kildare Community Games swimming finals took place in the K-Leisure Pool in Athy at the weekend where twenty seven swimming events were decided including three squad events. County Kildare will be represented by ten areas at the HSE National Community Games Finals in Athlone next May. The National Finals up to this have taken place during the August program but were moved to May for 2013 in a major restructuring of the program of Events.

The County Kildare Finals experienced a larger than usual turnout this year resulting in some very competitive events. Leixlip was the most successful area winning five individual events and a Squad while both Clane/Rathcoffey and Celbridge South will represent Kildare in four events. Newbridge St Brigid’s have two individual swimmers plus two squads heading to Athlone. Kilcock will have three members of the Curtain family representing Kildare. Holly (U14 Backstroke) and twins Eike and Scott in the U12 Breaststroke events. Maynooth East have two representative and there are one each from Kill/Johnstown, St Conleth’s, Two Mile House, and Confey

Newbridge St Brigid’s retained the Paddy Behan trophy for the U13 Boys Squad for a third time and their Girls brought home the Shield for the Under 13 Girls event. The Under 16 Girls Medley squad event went to Leixlip for the second time.

GYMNASTICS:

Scoil Mhuire Ballymany was once again the venue for County Kildare Community Games Gymnastic Finals. Changes to the National program of events resulted in there being just four Age categories for 2013 instead of five. Kildare Gymnasts have a strong tradition at the National Community Games Finals having won 4 gold in 2011 followed by three in 2012. All eight of Kildare’s Team for 2013 have represented Kildare Athlone previously, seven of them in 2012. Kildare’s Under 9 Competitor Patrick McGrath (St Conleth’s) won Silver at U8 in 2012. Cian Leahy (St Brigid’s) and Tadgh Murtagh (Kildare Town) are both bidding for a fourth successive National Title. This year they compete at Under 11 and Under 15. Cathal Hyland (Newbridge) missed out in 2012 having won Gold in 2011 but returns to Athlone this year in the U13 age group.

In the Girls events Aisling Murtagh (Kildare Town) who won Silver in U8 at the National Finals last year returns in the Under 9 while her cousin Eadaoin Murtagh (Kildare Town) having being placed fourth in 2011 and bronze last year now goes in the Under 11 event. Naoise Mc Bride (St Brigid’s) and Robyn Kennedy (St Brigid’s) will represent Kildare again, this time at U13 and U15 to make up Kildare’s 2013 Gymnastics team for Athlone on weekend of 24th to 26th May
