PLANS to upgrade mooring facilities along the canal in Naas and Sallins have been welcomed by boating enthusiasts.

Waterways Ireland wants to build a 210 metre long mooring facility in Sallins to accommodate a dozen boats. There will car parking bays for 12 vehicles and a disabled pathway access.

In Naas, a new slipway will be built on the Naas-Corbally branch of the canal upstream of Jigginstown Bridge and on the site of the Naas Sports Centre.

Access to this will be via the sports centre road infrastructure with a turning and parking area provided.

A 30 metre mooring facility will be built as well as a facilities to bring canoes to the waterway via a 15 metre “canoe step”.

If planning permission is forthcoming work could be completed by next March.

Alan Kelly, secretary of the Kildare branch of the Inland Waterways Association told the Leader facilities in Naas and Sallins “are long overdue”.

He added: “We broadly supports plans for development in Sallins and Naas; subject to reasonable terms and conditions for the operation and use of these facilities by boat owners on the canal.”
