St. Mary’s College rocks
2nd year students Niamh O'Brien, Riona Devereux, Grace Hodgkins, taking part in the 'Rock the Boat' World Record' attempt.
STUDENTS and teachers at St. Mary’s College in Naas combined to create a record breaking end to the school’s anniversary celebrations.
Almost 900 participants, mostly students at the girls school, performed “Rock the Boat” simultaneously – breaking the previous world record which was set by 820 people.
For verification purposes local gardai counted the students into the school hall and the other adjudicators were Osborne Solicitors, band members from ‘Miracle Bell’ and Kildare footballer Johnny Doyle.
All the students and even some of the teachers took to the floor of the sports hall, the music started and so did the ‘boat’ which amounted to the whole school community rocking back and forth and side to side for over five minutes until the record was broken.
There was a total of 898 participants.
The record breaking attempt was among the highlights of a series of fund day events held to mark the school’s 75th anniversary. The events also included a table quiz with teams were composed of students from each year group and sports events such as soccer, relay races and an obstacle course race. All students (and teachers) tried their hand at the various activities and although no world records were created, everyone had a great laugh.
