Donard FC lifted the club’s first ever KDFL Trophy today when they overcame Clane United by the odd goal in three to lift the Casey Division 2 Cup in a thriller tie in front of a large crowd at the Tegral Grounds Athy on Sunday afternoon.

Casey Cup Division 2 Final

Clane United: 1

Donard FC: 2

The club which was founded only three years ago started the brighter while Clane struggled to get control of midfield and Shane Daniels shot over from close range following good work by Gerry Fennell after only eight minutes. Clane reaction to this near miss by the Wicklow side was swift and a snap shot from just outside the box by Oisin Burke was just over.

Donard went 1-0 up after ten minutes when Harry Mangan won the ball in midfield beat Clane United defender Gary Cribbin and sent in an inche perfect cross for Gerry Fennell to head home from close range. Donard almost double their advantage soon after when some good work by Shane Daniels and Enda Bowes down the wing freed Harry Mangan. However his effort was just wide of Chris Campbell post. Clane struggling to find a rhythm continued to press and almost levelled on the half hour when a well taken corner by Alan Maloney was met by the head of Cian Byrnes however his effort was just over Dan Mann’s crossbar. Donard defended well to the break and went in 1-0 up.

The Wicklow side came out and continued their dominance in the second half and could have extended their lead after only one minute however Clane keeper Chris Campbell saved well to keep out a Gerry Fennell effort from 15 yards. Donard’s pressure eventually paid off on the 50th minute when Stephen Farrell won the ball in his own half and went on a great run down the left wing to cross at an angle into the box for Gerry Fennell to score his and his side’s second.

Clane finally found form and went on the attack and reduced the deficit midway through the half when a Cian Byrne’s shot found it way to the back of the Donard net via a defender to make it 2-1 to Donard.

Clane had two more clear chances in the last quarter to tie the game and bring it to extra time through a Cian Byrne tight angled shot from outside the area and a long range effort from Sean Harnett, however both were well defended by the Donard back four of Rory Twomey, Shane Daniels, Neil Stynes and Pat Flynn and Donard went on to claim their first piece of silverwear in the Club’s history.

Best for the winners were Shane Daniels, Rory Twomey and Neil Stynes in defence, Stephen Farrell, Enda Bowes and Gerry Fennell in midfield and Harry Mangan up front. While for a disappointed Clane United Cian Byrnes, Conor Black and Eoghan Crowley were best.
