This eagerly awaited Evening Herald Under 19 clash of the all Monread teams did not disappoint and was bursting with goal mouth action from the get go.
Evening Herald Under 19 Division
Monread (B): 3
Monread (A): 1
Both teams lying sixth and seventh in the table had a point to prove and it was the (B) team that registered the first goal of the game after twelve minutes when Luca Lehane made no mistake from close range giving (A) keeper Shane Caplice no chance.
The (A) team started to claw their way into the game after this early set back and midfielder Kevin Naughton went close on 14 minutes, his effort narrowly wide of Gary Lane’s right post and five minutes later Brian McDonnell saw his shot agonisingly wide of the right post after being put through by Alex Scully.
With the (A) team pushing for the all important equaliser, Monread (B) broke and Jake O’Reilly sent a great ball into the area however Ruairi O’Domhnall’s headed effort was just over the bar on the half hour mark. The (A) team kept the pressure on and created another glorious chance through Kevin Naughton who brought a fantastic fingertip save from Gary Lane in the (B) team goal to leave Monread (B) going into the break with a slender 1-0 lead over their opponents.
Monread (B) were delivered a boost ten minutes into the second half when a mix up in the (A) defence allowed Barry Murphy in for an easy tap in to put his side 2-0 up. The (B) team were to go further ahead midway through the second half when man of the match Jake O Reilly went on a mazy run through midfield avoiding the challenge of Sean McCormack and David Watson and hit a stunning 30 yard shot into the top right hand corner of Shane Caplice’s net to leave their side 3-0 up and cruising.
However the (A) team were not to give up that easily and continued to claw their way back into the game. They were rewarded with ten minutes remaining when Kevin Naughton slotted home following a great individual effort.
However this score was too little too late for the (A) team with Monread (B) taking all three valuable points. Best for the winners were Jake O’Reilly, Ruairi O’Domhnall and Gary Lane in goal while Niall Walsh, Kevin Naughton and Brian McDonnell never stopped trying for Monread (A)
