Cooks Cabin Division 2 joint league leaders Coill Dubh AFC crashed out of the Casey Divisional Cup on Sunday when they were narrowly defeated by second placed Barnhall Rovers at Cusack Park.
In a very upon and entertaining first half chances were at a premium however the Leixlip side were first to make an impression when the lively Kevin Kenna went one on one with the home ‘keeper Nathan Conlon after five minutes. Kenna was fouled on the edge of the area and the resultant free kick was sent just over Conlon’s bar by Graham O Reilly.
Midway through the half the home side had chances of their own however a double save by the visiting ‘keeper Mark Charles from shots by Graham O’’Sullivan and Colin Mitchell kept the sides level, the remainder of the first half was played out in midfield and both sides went in 0-0 at the break.
The visitors came out more determined in the second half and went 1-0 up after ten minutes when Dave Allen played Kevin Kenna through from midfield and he made no mistake slotting past the outreached Conlon in the home goal.
They could have doubled their advantage five minutes later but an effort by Graham O Reilly was expertly dealt with by Conlon.
Coill Dubh saw this as a let off and immediately pulled them selves together and their efforts paid off on the hour when they equalised. Kevin Cahill, who was on top of his game in midfield, sent a glorious through ball to Brian Fogarty. Fogarty saw visiting ‘keeper Mark Charles slightly off his line and sent a looping ball over the outstretched custodian and to the back of the net. The score remained at 1-1 to the final whistle.
Rovers came out strong in extra time and took the lead within minutes when goal hero Kevin Kenna struck again, a lose ball falling kindly for him in a crouded area and he made no mistake from close range giving Nathan Conlon no chance and putting his side 2-1 up.
However disaster struck soon after when he was given his marching orders by Referee JC Kelly for a second cautionable offence.
With the extra man Coill Dubh took advantage but could find no way past Jer and Alan Egan and Gary and Dave Allen in the Rovers defence.
The Leixlip side held on for victory and book their place in the semi final.
Best for the winners were Alan Egan in defence, Colm McManus in midfield and two goal hero Kevin Kenna while Gary Tennyson in defence and Jack Kenny and Alan Mitchell in midfield tried hardest.
