Rathangan Mo bros raise over E5k
THE Rathangan Mo bros may have felt the chill last Friday night as they shed their beards and moustaches, but it was all for a good cause - to raise awareness about men’s health issues and prostate cancer.
The volunteers, families and friends joined the hairy crew at Fullam’s Pub last Friday November 30, which marked the end of a month long abstinence from shaving. Publican, John Fullam said he was looking forward to getting his moustache shaved off but was leaving it on a little bit longer to allow him to collect some outstanding funds.
“It was a great night. Justin Phelan had it all organised. Mick Dunne, the local barber was here and we had a lady who sang for the Queen, Shona McGarrigle - she sang two songs. We also had Owen O’Neill. He was equally fantastic,” he said.
Greg Norris provided the music free of charge.
John thanked all the volunteers who took part, those who helped out with sandwiches and sausages including Niamh O’Dowd, Caroline Phelan and Joan Kennedy. Ken Maloney was crowned Mr Movember. John pointed out that Coley Brouder, was one Movember man who stood out as he got his moustache shaved off for the first time in 32 years. CORE chairman, Martin Shiel also stepped into the barber’s chair. Several locals also offered very impressive prizes for the raffle.
“It was a fantastic night but the most important thing is to get the message out to men about how important it is for them to get themselves checked. It’s only a blood test and early detection is vital,” said John.
