Old games revived at Sallins school

TEACHERS from six European countries paid a visit to Sallins national school as part of a partnership programme.
The Comenius programme was set up to allow schools from different European countries to work together on a project embracing the idea of education for all, and inclusion of children from all manner of backgrounds.
St. Laurence’s NS is participating in a current partnership programme entitled ‘Traditional Children’s Games’. It runs from 2011-2013 and is made up of eight countries in total – Ireland, Turkey, Portugal, Lithuania, Romania, Liechtenstein, Greece and Italy.
The aim of the project is that each country researches their most popular traditional games. These are taught to the children in the school. Some of these games are alive and well, but others are being revived from the past and introduced to the children again. Teachers from Sallins have already visited some of the participating schools and experienced school life and culture in those countries.
The European visitors were treated to a display of traditional Irish games including skipping, hopscotch, marbles, conkers, ball against the wall, and especially hurling and camogie.
