MAYNOOTH Community Council has heard call for the university to provide a multi-storey car park on the campus.

The Council’s monthly meeting in the Glenroyal Hotel last week heard that much of the town of Maynooth’s parking problems were due to NUIM expansion.

NUIM lecturer Muireann Ni Bhrolchain said the college was short 200 parking spaces two years ago. Since then numbers attending the college are increasing, particularly adults who have no alternative but to drive to the area, she added.

She said there is plenty of green space for parking to be created.

NUIM Student Union President Seamus Reynolds said a multi-storey car park should be built and identified space near the astroturf pitches. “They reason there is no land being made available is that the university is waiting for the price of land to increase,” he claimed.

Asked if it had any plans to increase parking, an NUI Maynooth spokesperson said: “Under NUI Maynooth’s Traffic Management policy, additional parking spaces continue to be provided where possible. For the 2012/2013 academic year an extra 72 spaces have been created and a further 72 spaces will come on stream shortly with the completion of the Library project. We also acquired the use of 76 overflow parking spaces on the Moyglare Road, and the University continues to seek additional overflow parking facilities in the vicinity of the campus.”

NUIM said it promotes cycling, bus services and car sharing in order to reduce the level of single occupant car journeys that are made to campus.
