Evidence of the fruit borne by the twinning of Newbridge with the Florida city of Ocala was heard at last week’s meeting of the town council.
A letter has been issued from the fire department in Ocala inviting Newbridge-based fire-fighters to come over for training.
The invitation is for two people and includes accomodation for the visitors as well as the training.
Cllr. Fiona O’Loughlin congratulated Colrs. Murty Aspell and Mick Deeley for his work on the project and noted that it sounded like a wonderful opportunity for anyone in the Newbridge area who might be interested.
“If you were working the field, it would be a great opportunity. You’d be learning from the best,” she noted.
Elsewhere Gerald Cash of Curragh Carpets has written to the members of the Council updating them on progress for the company.
Following a meeting with Florida-based hoteliers, a follow-on meeting has been arranged which could open up the Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton chains across America to Curragh Carpets.
This news was warmly welcomed by the members.
Cllr. Willie Hamilton noted that Curragh Carpets is now the last carpet producer in Ireland and that they have gone through a very tough time.
