Caragh woman Lorraine Duane’s embryonic business idea was launched at Showcase 2014 in the RDS. She came up with the idea of “Wash & Learn” while training to be a Montessori teacher at Portobello College.
“I had been made redundant in 2009 and decided to go back to college and during this time I was given an assignment to come up with an idea to help children on a daily basis, “ she recalled. At the time her daughter Leah (then 4), a pupil at Caragh NS, was going to her grandparents for a sleepover. “I was packing her bag, had her toiletries in one compartment and it struck me how disorganised it was for a child. I looked for a child’s wash bag and there were none suitable for her so I decided to make one myself and the idea was born.
”Wash & Learn is a toiletry bag that hangs on the bathroom door and teaches a child the basics of personal hygiene while indirectly teaching them how to dress themselves. Each compartment has a dressing tool where they can store their toothbrush , toothpaste, sponge and soap. Ms. Duane (38) contacted the Kildare County Enterprise Board with her idea. “After a lot of hard work and research my product was made in 2013 and I put it forward for Showcase.” Over 5,000 buyers attended the RDS event, many of them from abroad.
