Free parking is to be introduced for all visitors to Naas every Saturday from October 5.

Members of Naas Town Council unanimously agreeed at a meeting on September 17 to approve free parking on Saturdays.

Effectively, it will be possible to park from 6pm on Friday evening until 9am the following Monday free gratis.

The move is set to cost the counil almost €30,000 in lost revenue.

The decision follows pressure from traders concerned at the reduced level of spending because of the recession, the opening of out-of-town shopping centres and the cost of parking. It’s not clear if private car park operators will follow suit.

Naas Mayor Emer McDaid said that while there was a proposal by North Kildare Chamber to allow two hours of free parking every morning she felt Saturday parking would be a better idea.

“Some of the shops don’t open until 10am and people leaving children to schools in the mornings are not generally interested in staying around to shop afterwards,” she said.
